Phillips Elementary Receives Prestigious Award [Message #1]

On Tuesday, November 7th, Dave Scholz and Tina Gilge, staff at the Phillips Elementary School, attended an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. to accept the National Blue Ribbon School Award for the Phillips Elementary School.

The National Blue Ribbon program's purpose is to "honor and bring public attention to American schools for their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups, demonstrating that all students can achieve to high academic standards. It is part of a larger Department of Education effort to identify and disseminate knowledge about effective school leadership and teaching practices."

The elementary school is one of 342 schools nationwide, and one of nine in Wisconsin, which earned the award for 2017.

State Superintendent Tony Evers commented that "nationwide, only a few schools achieve Blue Ribbon status each year. The Blue Ribbon program recognizes the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in striving for solid student academic achievement in a safe and supportive learning environment."

According to Phillips Elementary School principal, Dave Scholz, a keynote speaker at the ceremony stated that college athletes have a 1.7% chance of becoming a professional athlete but only a quarter of a percent of schools receive a Blue Ribbon Award each year.

To celebrate this prestigious success, elementary school students will participate in a parade on Monday, November 13th at 2:15 p.m. The parade will start at Maple Street and go to Balsam Street past the courthouse down Lake Avenue. Come cheer on the students & teachers for their great achievements.

Ever wonder what it would look like to see 339 students and school staff parade down Lake Avenue?
