| Tourism Department Saved For At Least One Year
At the annual budget meeting on Tuesday, County Board supervisors voted 8 to 4 to keep full funding ($107,000) of the tourism department. A pre-meeting draft budget had the department being eliminated, a suggestion by Nick Trimner, county administrator, and also supported by four supervisors. Based on data, they felt that the county wasn't getting its money's worth from the tourism department. This tourism department elimination plan would have saved the county about $70,000 with $15,000 going to the Park Falls and Phillips Chambers of Commerce to offset the loss of the tourism department.
Supervisor Bob Kopisch stated, "I think we can do better. I think continuing to do it the way we're doing it isn't going to make it happen. I think there's potential here to do something different. I just don't understand what the real issue is. Why are we being so protective of not taking a chance of doing something differently and possibly get some gain out of it?"
The money to fund the tourism department will come from the general fund.
